Minnesota corn planting at 61%, soybeans 30% planted

Excess precipitation stalled many farmers in Minnesota toward the end of last week.

USDA’s latest crop update says with four days suitable for fieldwork, corn planting advanced to 61 percent.  That’s more than a week ahead of a year ago and one day faster than the five-year average.  Corn emergence reached 15 percent.

Soybeans are 30 percent planted compared to 13 percent last week, 10 percent last year, and 37 percent normally.

For small grains, spring wheat is 28 percent seeded, oats are at 53 percent, and 23 percent of the barley crop is in.

Three-quarters of the state’s sugarbeet crop is planted, and potato planting is 40 percent complete.
