Some Minnesota 4-H scholarship recipients say showing livestock has helped them become better people.

Anna Johnson of Sebeka is bringing a registered red angus heifer to the Minnesota State Fair this year.

“Showing livestock (has) taught me a lot about responsibility, hard work and how to really stick with a project.  And of course, I’ve met a lot of great people through showing livestock.  A lot of the shows we go to, the same people are there.  And we’ve made a lot of connections that have helped me out, especially with going to college.”

Johnson is one of 11 recipients of $2,000 scholarships through the 4-H Purple Ribbon Auction and will be a sophomore at the University of Minnesota-Crookston this fall.

Brigit Lozinski of Camby is entering her sophomore year at South Dakota State University and tells Brownfield agriculture has formed the foundation for her life.

“Everything in which my morals and beliefs are in my life…I’ve grown and just had tremendous opportunities within the agriculture industry.”

Lozinski says she began showing livestock when she was five and it has opened the door to many friendships and opportunities.

The scholarship winners will be recognized Saturday ahead of the 4-H Purple Ribbon auction at the state fair.
