Milk production gains continue

Milk production for June and the second quarter continue to show increases.

USDA says production in the U.S. for the month totaled nearly 19 billion pounds, up nearly three percent, with production per cow up 26 pounds from last year.  

The herd size was up 153,000 head on the year and down 1,000 from last month. 

South Dakota production grew nearly 15 percent followed by Indiana, up more than eight percent. Production in Virginia was down four percent. Michigan remains the leader in per cow output.

Milk production in the second quarter of 2021 was up nearly four percent from last year during the same period with a herd size of 9.5 million cows.  The herd size increased by 141,000 from the same quarter last year and was up 47,000 head from the first quarter.
