Midweek storms bring welcome moisture to southeast Minnesota

Parched soils are being replenished by heavy rains in parts of southeast Minnesota.

Gary Prescher farms in Faribault County and tells Brownfield storms brought one to two inches of rain to his area Wednesday.

“Folks in my neighborhood were starting to wonder again if it was going to be a repeat of say 2012 (because) we’ve been extremely dry since last spring.”

He says the latest rainfall is soaking in as frost moves down in the soil.

“At least far enough so we can get a lot of permeability going here. We did get an inch or two of rain during the month of March, which helped. But right now I’m guessing we’re maybe at 50 percent soil recharge here.”

Prescher says “that’s not a bad place” to be going into planting as long as there are timely rains this growing season.
