Michigan’s harvest speeds ahead

Scattered precipitation last week brought welcomed relief to areas of Michigan facing dry conditions as farmers continued harvest.

The USDA says corn condition was 62 percent good to excellent and 86 percent mature.  Corn silage harvest reached 93 percent while grain harvest is at 22 percent.

Soybeans improved to 67 percent good to excellent with 49 percent harvested.  Dry beans are 89 percent harvested while sugarbeets are at 34 percent.

Winter wheat planting is running ahead of last year and the five-year average at 74 percent finished and 37 percent emerged.

Apple growers continue to report an exceptional harvest with some labor and bin shortages.
