Michigan’s crops endured a hot week with little rain

Michigan’s crops endured a hot week with a little weekend rain relief.  USDA statistician Marlo Johnson says rain events varied throughout the state but abnormally dry weather continued across the northwest and central lower peninsula in the week ending Sunday.

Johnson says there was good progress with the winter wheat harvest and corn began to tassle.

Fifty-two percent of Michigan’s corn is silking with 8% in the dough stage.

Seventy percent of the soybeans are now blooming with 32% setting pods.

Ninety-three percent of the winter wheat is mature, and 68% has now been harvested.

Sixty-seven percent of dry beans are blooming with 3% setting pods.

The second crop of alfalfa hay is 52% cut and some farmers are cutting third-crop alfalfa this week.

USDA says Michigan’s vegetable and fruit producers have relied heavily on irrigation because of the lack of rain.
