Michigan mandates meat processing COVID-19 safety protocols

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed an executive order on new workplace safety requirements for meatpacking plants.

She cites the CDC’s reports that meat and poultry processing plants have been a source for several outbreaks in the state and across the U.S. because of close proximity to workers.

Facilities will now be required to conduct a daily entry screening, install physical barriers to separate employees, provide masks and group employees together in cohorts as part of the order among other stipulations.

Michigan Farm Bureau says most if not all requirements have been in place following federal recommendations.

Processors are eligible to apply for Michigan Agricultural Safety Grants to help cover added costs.
