Michigan hosts Senate Ag Committee farm bill hearing

The Senate Ag Committee is hearing farmer concerns ahead of the 2023 Farm Bill.

Senate committee leaders Debbie Stabenow and John Boozman are hearing from nearly 20 food and farm leaders in Michigan including Ashley Kennedy.

“Farmers have an amazing story to tell, we’ve been environmental stewards for generations, and we need to find ways to share that, use that, working on climate change in the bigger picture,” she shares.

Testifying on behalf of the National Milk Producers Federation and Michigan Milk Producers Association, Kennedy tells Brownfield once the dairy industry puts forth a unified solution to change the milk pricing system, it needs to be supported.

“We lost $750 million as a country in the Class I price because things were crazy with COVID-19 and then the government bought a lot of cheese,” she says.

Kennedy, like many others, is also calling for continued support of conservation, farmer mental health, and access to trade.

Kennedy milks 240 cows with her husband in Bad Axe.
