Michigan hops faring well

Michigan State University Extension’s hop educator says a dry start to the spring has led to a mostly disease-free season.

“The hops look really, really nice.”

Rob Sirrine tells Brownfield he expects an average to above-average production year and demand has fluctuated with consumer behavior during the pandemic.

“Some of the growers that I’ve talked to have been sold out for the last six months but that’s only 10 or 20 acres of hops, other ones are still sitting on supplies,” he explains.  “

Sirrine expects as people get more comfortable with outings, beer consumption, along with hop demand will continue to increase.
