Michigan honey productions inches up

Michigan honey production increased two percent in 2016 retaining its top spot as the eighth largest producer in the country.

The USDA says the state’s 89,000 honey producing colonies produced more than five million pounds with an average of 60 pounds of honey per colony.

The average price for Michigan produced honey totaled $2.25 per pound, down 19 cents from the year before. Total state production was valued at $12 million, down six percent.

Nationally, honey production rose three percent last year while colonies from which honey was harvested climbed four percent.
