Michigan hay market open to growth

Michigan State University is offering a short course on hay production for beginning and experienced growers.

Extension educator Kim Cassida tells Brownfield consistent demand for hay makes it an ideal crop for landowners of all sizes.

“It never seems like we have enough, at least of the good hay, and so this is a market that’s reasonably stable,” she explains.

But, she says growing it is not simple which is what the online Hay Production 101 course will help to navigate.

“Obviously we can’t control the weather, but there are things that we can do to help make the best of what we’re presented with,” she says.

She says good hay is currently short in Michigan following a cold snap at the start of the season last year and opportunities exist in all regions of the state.  The online course takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout March.
