Michigan Foremost plant speeding along

Foremost Farms is on track to accept milk at a new processing plant in Michigan by this November.

Foremost Farms Chief Operating Officer Ralph Briggs tells Brownfield the co-op started construction last week.  “We have an extremely aggressive schedule, but our goal is to be done by October 15th and processing milk by November 1st or the 10th.”

He says the plant will help better balances the supply of milk in the region and cut transportation costs.  “We have the ability to consume 25 to 50 percent of that milk at our facilities ourselves so it’s going to save us significantly on transportation costs immediately.”

Briggs says Foremost has several areas where they are selling milk at less than profitable levels because of transportation costs and current milk prices.

Once complete, the Greenville plant will process up to six million pounds a day of milk which will then be shipped as milk solids across the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest to other Foremost dairy processing facilities.

Foremost Farms is headquartered in Baraboo, Wisconsin and represents dairy farmers in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana and Ohio.
