Michigan Farm Bureau members want solutions to dairy pricing hurdles

Michigan Farm Bureau delegates say dairy price issues need action.

Ernie Birchmeier tells Brownfield national Farm Bureau dairy policy recommendations last year were brought forth by Michigan delegates and are continuing to evolve after they were adopted.

“Our members called for the American Farm Bureau to put in place a task force to look at dairy pricing alternatives, dairy pricing issues, and concerns within the industry,” he explains.

Birchmeier says delegates support that task force continuing and to be more representative of strong dairy production states like Michigan.

“Along with that, they called for the American Farm Bureau Federation to lead a conference of dairy industry representatives to look at changes to the Federal Milk Marketing Order,” he says.

Birchmeier says there’s a need to pull all parts of the dairy sector together and sit down to discuss challenges in the outdated system with farmer input.

Michigan’s proposals, which passed this week, will be debated in January as part of the American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Convention.
