Michigan Corn adds carbon focus to research projects

The Corn Marketing Program of Michigan has added carbon research to their portfolio of projects for the year.

Research manager Kristin Poley tells Brownfield farmers want to know how they can get involved in carbon sequestration and how they can get paid for it.

“This year I’m really excited that the Corn Marketing Program is supporting two separate research projects looking into certain sustainable agricultural practices and how to measure that potential change in carbon on the farm,” she says.

Researchers at Michigan State University will be studying how prescription maps can be used to earn carbon credits while Mid-Michigan Agronomy will look at how cover cropping systems and tillage practices effect carbon retention.

Other projects for 2021 include ways to manage Tar Spot, conservation practices to reduce runoff, and other agronomic studies which Poley says reflect the needs of Michigan farmers.
