Michigan Ag Day connects lawmakers with needs of farmers

More than 30 ag groups are visiting with lawmakers today for the 16th Annual Michigan Agriculture Day at the Capitol.

Michigan Farm Bureau’s Rob Anderson tells Brownfield 2019 was a very difficult year for farmers in the state and the event will highlight the importance of one of Michigan’s top industries.

“The weather was extremely problematic for farmers planting crops in the spring, harvesting crops in the fall and everything in between.  I think nearly every agricultural commodity group was touched in some way and not in a positive way.”

He says building relationships with lawmakers helped farmers gain access to a $15 million low-interest disaster loan program to assist those affected by extreme weather in 2018 and 2019.  USDA says 77 of Michigan’s 83 counties filed for disaster assistance last year.

Anderson says Farm Bureau will also be focusing on the importance of funding the Michigan Department of Agriculture, ag research and the state’s voluntary conservation stewardship program.
