Michigan 4-H members make, donate 5,000+ masks

Michigan 4-H members have been working to help protect people during the coronavirus pandemic.

Anne Kretschmann is the 4-H program coordinator with the Michigan State University Extension. She says, “On April 15th, we launched a statewide effort with a goal of making as many masks as quickly as we possibly could.”

Kretschmann tells Brownfield the effort started as a grass-roots project, and quickly expanded statewide. “We started with just a few youths and we currently have over 150 youth members and volunteers from 45 counties statewide here in Michigan involved in this project.”

So far, Kretschmann says more than 150 youth volunteers have made more than five-thousand face masks for distribution around the state. “Essential workers, members of the healthcare workforce, and pretty much, we’ve had them donated to over 100 locations statewide.”

Kretschmann says so far, the materials have been donated by 4-H clubs or individual members, but donations of sewing supplies and money are welcome to help the effort continue.  More information is available online at 4-H Mask Project.
