Mexico first to ratify USMCA

Mexico is the first to ratify the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement. The deal received wide support in the Mexican Senate, which voted 114 to 4. Three abstained.

Politico quoted one Mexican lawmaker saying the USMCA is synonymous with opportunity in the short and long term.

The agreement still has to pass lawmaking bodies in Canada and the U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi favors strengthening enforcement language of the deal, but any change requires a sign-off from Mexico and Canada.

The USMCA is meant to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement that went into effect among the same three countries in 1994.
