Mexico a promising market for US ethanol

The CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association says he sees tremendous opportunity for growth of ethanol exports to Mexico.

“We think really by the first quarter of next year we could see some significant volumes begin to flow to Mexico.”

Geoff Cooper tells Brownfield Mexico’s government recently approved the use of E10 in some locations.

“Mexico consumes an amount of gasoline that is about 12 billion gallons annually. If all of that was to move to E10 10% ethanol blends, that is a market for about 1.2 billion gallons of ethanol.”

Cooper says some of that demand could easily be served by the US since the supply is so close.

To get the most opportunity from this market, Cooper says the USMCA needs to be ratified and Mexico needs to approve E10 nationwide, which he says is in process.

Brownfield interviewed Cooper at the 2019 NAFB Convention in Kansas City.
