Mexican farmer addresses GM corn trade dispute

A farmer from Mexico says he hopes the biotech corn dispute with the United States is settled soon.

Guillermo Breton is a fifth generation farmer who raises corn, barley, and rye grass forages.

“Farmers need to raise our voice and go to Parliament and go to Senate and defend our industry,” he said. “There is no logical thinking in all of this. We will win the battle.”

He says the Mexican government’s decision to ban GM corn imports from the U.S. was made, “Without any science regard,” Breton said. “Just because of some ideologies against GMOs.”

Breton says Mexican producers need more and more grain for the country’s growing livestock industry.

He spoke during a call with National Association of Farm Broadcasting members on Friday.
