Mexican buyers tour Missouri/Illinois cattle operations

A group of Mexican buyers are touring cattle operations in Missouri and Illinois this week sponsored by ag departments in both states.

On Tuesday, the buyers from Mexico visited Mead Farms, a seedstock operation in Barnett, Missouri dealing with Angus, Red Angus, Charolais and Herefords.

Jennifer Russell, Mead Farms’ herd manager, says the interest shown by the Mexican buyers indicates deals will be made, “Ninety-percent of our customers are from Missouri and so I’m never going to lose that basis. That’s who I develop my bulls for. (But,) I think the cattle will work in all environments. I think there’s something for everyone when we’ve got this many cattle. We just try to get out a good product.”

Russell says they work toward consistency, “Rather than having a lot of outliers we’re very consistent, try to get a bunch of bulls that look a lot alike and can perform for about anybody.”

Russell says the Mexican buyers want what every buyer wants, “Some of the questions they’ve asked me is what are some of my favorite sires. Just some of the cattle questions – what cattle work best – that kind of thing.”  Missouri is the second biggest cow-calf state behind Texas.
