Meteorologist is closely watching weather conditions in South America

A meteorologist is keeping a close eye on weather conditions in South America.

Eric Snodgrass, the principal atmospheric scientist with Nutrien Ag Solutions, says many soybean producing areas in northern Brazil are turning wet during a critical point in the season.

“It’s like us going over super wet in October, we don’t want that, we want to get a crop out in October and want dry conditions,” he says. “If they have any delay in their safrinha crop due to not getting the first crop of soybeans out in time we could see some support here in the US.”

He says some of the long-range forecasts are hinting at a dry finish to the crop in Argentina.

“It’s the first kind of news out of South America that says it’s not as perfect as it has been past couple of years,” he says. “We need to watch vigilantly. But I think the markets will react after it happens, not on a forecast so we’ll keep an eye on it.”

Brownfield interviewed Snodgrass at the First Farmers Bank and Trust Ag Summit in West Lafayette, Indiana.
