Meat retailer concerned the economy may impact consumer demand

A small meat retailer says he’s concerned that a slowing economy could affect customer demand at his store.

Max McClean owns Nebraska-based McClean Beef. “It’s going to start slowing the amount of beef people buy possibly. I think they are still going to buy it because it’s got a unique taste and it’s a Cadillac, I think.”

He tells Brownfield he’s had to adjust his marketing plan to compete with larger companies. “We’ve been trying to go to restaurants and bars to try and promote it, but it’s hard to compete with Cisco because their prices are less.”

But, McLean says, he’s found success selling his product directly to consumers. “We just have to market it by having people try it. The people we’ve talked to who’ve tired it, they won’t go back to the other ones.”

He says they offer cuts of beef through vending machines outside his business in York and that’s becoming very popular.
