Meat Institute releases baseline sustainability report

The U.S. meat industry has released its first report measuring environmental sustainability progress across its supply chain.

Eric Mittenthal with the North American Meat Institute tells Brownfield the report covers 90 percent of meat sold in the U.S.

“Our members are really committed to reducing our environmental impact which is something that a lot of folks are paying attention to,” he says.  “Eighty-one percent of the facilities that reported data from our membership have a commitment to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.”

He says the report also found more than 80 percent of facilities are committed to minimizing packaging waste and more than 70 percent have a focus to reduce food waste.  Animal welfare, food safety, and reducing food insecurity are other commitment areas.

Mittenthal will be speaking about the work at next week’s COP27 Climate Change Conference in Egypt and says having data-driven transparent metrics is significant for global discussions.

“We wanted to be sure that we were collecting data and focused on improvements on things that are being done globally and are well recognized worldwide, consistent with the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” he says.

The baseline report covers Protein PACT, For the People, Animals and Climate of Tomorrow, partners including beef, pork, poultry, dairy, and feed supply chain sectors along with packers and processors with the Meat Institute.
