Meat industry concerned with Trump immigration order

The president and CEO of the North American Meat Institute is concerned that President Trump’s immigration ban could cause a significant impact on the meat industry.

In a statement released to Brownfield, Barry Carpenter said he hopes the administration gives careful consideration to the ramifications policy changes like these can have on businesses and on foreign born workers who are eager to build new lives in America.

The order provides for a four-month suspension to the nation’s refugee program. Applicants who are already in the program may be admitted after going through a revised visa process.

Nearly 500,000 people are employed by the meat industry in the U.S. and Carpenter says the institute does not have data on the current number of refugees who are employed.

He says refugees are important to some companies’ labor forces, especially in rural communities where low unemployment creates a tight labor supply and companies work with local government and organizations to help refugee assimilate into American culture and communities.
