Massachusetts’ animal welfare measure expected to pass
Various media reports indicate an animal welfare ballot measure in Massachusetts is likely to pass.
The referendum would bar the sale of eggs from caged hens or meat from animals that were tightly confined.
According to recent polls, more than 60 percent of Massachusetts voters favor the measure. The National Pork Producers Council has helped fund an ad campaign against the measure, as has Forrest Lucas, the Indiana businessman who founded the advocacy group Protect the Harvest to fight measures such as the Massachusetts initiative.
