Market opportunities for growers

A senior grains and oilseeds analyst with Rabo AgriFinance says there are still market opportunities for growers to improve profitability in 2019.

“We think there are some opportunities down the road, but we would also caution them to not be greedy about it because it might be short lived,” he says. “There’s a lot of people doing the same thing that want to sell this market so it will be sold- opportunities in basis is probably where those opportunities are.”

Steve Nicholson tells Brownfield there will also be opportunities in the next two years.

“You still see fours on the board for those years and as we’ve said many times, let’s sell a crop before we plant it and think ahead,” he says. “I think the other opportunity probably is that there is a carry in this market so why not store some of that grain.”

He says there are some unconventional options to consider including double cropping and specialty crops.

Nicholson spoke to Brownfield at the Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Illinois.
