Managing weeds through harvest

Farmers are encouraged not to dismiss weed management once harvest gets going.

Kurt Maertens with BASF says weed pressure could dictate the order fields get harvested.

“If you’ve got a field where there’s more escapes than you’d like and the rest of your fields are clean, you may harvest that field (and) make sure to take some time to clean your machine. Clean the header, clean the combine as best you can so we reduce the chance of moving seed into another field.”

He tells Brownfield tillage equipment can also move weed seed from one field to another.

“Before you move that piece of equipment into another field that’s been relatively clean, make sure you spend a little time cleaning up that tillage tool.”

Maertens says it’s also important to document weed pressure during harvest to help plan for the next growing season.
