Livestock composting certification courses

In Ohio, there are four approved methods for disposing of livestock mortality, composting, incineration, burial and rendering.

But livestock producers wanting to use composting as a method to deal with livestock and poultry mortality must be certified.

For producers needing certification, Ohio State University Extension will be holding certification courses on November 18 in Canfield and November 20 at the Putnam County Extension office.

“They’ll learn the process of composting, sizing those different bins that they’ll need for the process and then siding it, that’s all part of the certification class,” said Clif Little, Extension educator in Guernsey County. “Generally it takes about two hours to get through the materials.”
