Lingering impact of spring derecho felt in southwest Minnesota

The impact of a major wind event this spring is still being felt in southwest Minnesota.

Joel Schreurs grows corn and soybeans in Lincoln County and says a derecho tore through his area earlier this year, damaging two grain bins.

“We were supposed to get them put up, but our contractor is just so far behind (because) there were so many storms in this area.”

He tells Brownfield they finished harvesting soybeans a couple weeks ago and are about three quarters done with corn.

“I think we’re down to 120 to 140 acres, somewhere in there, so we’re just kind of waiting for some bin space.”

Schreurs says it’s been dry two years in a row and yields reflect that.
