Lighthizer reports ‘substantial progress’; Trump says China will buy more beans

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says “substantial progress” was made as American and Chinese negotiators finished two days of trade talks Thursday in Washington.

Adding to the optimism, President Trump announced that Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin would travel to China in the next few days to continue negotiations between the two countries. Trump also indicated that he plans to meet with Chinese president Xi, at some point, to try to seal a comprehensive trade deal.

Trump also announced that China has agreed to buy another five million tons of U.S. soybeans, saying “that’s going to make our farmers very happy”. Exact details of that purchase are not yet clear, however.
