Lighthizer: Asian trade efforts continue

Washington lawmakers want to know how the Trump administration will promote Pacific Rim trade in the absence of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. One of the president’s first acts after taking office was to pull the U.S. out of the twelve-nation deal.

Agri-Pulse says U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer assured House Ways and Means Committee members this week that the U.S. will not abandon trade efforts with Asia-Pacific countries.  The trade ambassador didn’t specify potential bilateral deals with countries in the region, but says a list is being drafted of countries that would be good candidates for bilateral trade deals.

Committee chairman Republican Kevin Brady of Texas told Lighthizer the fear is that if America doesn’t lead in fair and free trade, it will grow weaker and U.S. trade competitors will grow stronger.
