Legislation to fund MAEAP moves to Senate

Legislation that will continue Michigan’s voluntary environmental stewardship program on farms has been sent to the full Senate for consideration.

Senate Bill 494 renews current fertilizer and pesticide fees paid by farmers and agribusinesses to fund the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program through 2025.

The legislation creates the Environmental Assurance Advisory Council to provide recommendations and incentives to increase participation in the program and creates the Freshwater Protection Fund in the State Treasury for an emergency response to water contamination as well as assistance to help with disposal and recycling programs.

Michigan Farm Bureau supports the measure saying lawmakers only have 11 scheduled session days remaining before the current law expires on Dec. 31.
