Late December snow halts Iowa fieldwork

A mild start to December in Iowa gave way to measurable snowfall and closer to seasonal temperatures late in the month.

The USDA says that halted most fieldwork, but ahead of the snow, producers were still cleaning up from the derecho, finishing fall tillage, and applying manure and nitrogen.

The corn and soybeans harvests wrapped by the end of November and livestock benefiting from the weather and reportedly grazing on corn stalks.

Soil moisture levels are a concern in most of the state.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition numbers resume in April.
