Large Canadian cattle feeder shutting down

feedlot-calf-klaOne of the largest cattle feeding operations in Western Canada is shutting down.

Alberta-based Western Feedlots, which has a 100-thousand head capacity, cites low market returns and “the poor political environment in Alberta” as contributing factors in the decision.

Western did not elaborate on that statement, but the Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association (ACFA) says government-imposed taxes and fees are a growing concern. The latest is a carbon tax being implemented by the province that goes into effect next year. ACFA estimates it will cost its members between six and seven dollars per head.

Analysts say the loss of Western and the prospect that cattle feeding losses might lead to more feedlot closures also has implications for the future of Alberta’s two big packers, Cargill and JBS.
