Labor issues cause for concern for pig farmers

Labor issues continue to stir up uncertainty for pig farmers.

Compeer Financial director of swine lending Kent Bang says processing challenges stemming from the start of the pandemic remain.

“Particularly in packer processors where they may be 15 to 20 to 25 percent short on labor on any given day.”

He tells Brownfield packers are pulling workers off harvest lines while finding ways to move meat without further processing.

“That impacts everybody’s bottom-line. It impacts the processor’s bottom-line, so obviously they can offer less for the pigs.”

He says Congress could help solve the ag labor problem with immigration reform.

Bang made these comments during an upcoming podcast titled What’s Happening with the Pork Industry, a content partnership between Brownfield and Compeer Financial.
