La Nina could impact soybean planting in Brazil, Argentina

A meteorologist says a La Nina weather pattern could delay soybean planting in parts of South America.

Eric Snodgrass is the principal atmospheric scientist with Nutrien Ag Solutions.

“The La Nina tends to delay the planting of the first crop of soybeans in Brazil by keeping things a little bit drier in September, October, and early November,” he says.

He tells Brownfield southern Brazil and parts of Argentina could see drought-like conditions.

“Should the La Nina continue and should it be the more dominant force going through winter, in South America it would likely favor drier conditions in southern Brazil and parts of Argentina, which could knock back their yield potential,” he says.

But, Snodgrass says South America is planning on acreage expansions so even if yield is impacted by a La Nina weather pattern there could still be a huge crop.
