Know when to set your phone down this harvest season

With the hustle and bustle of harvest season approaching, a grain elevator manager reminds farmers to stay safe.

Mark Heil manages Prairie Central Cooperative in north central Illinois. He tells Brownfield with social distancing and other COVID-19 precautions in place, he predicts farmers and elevator workers will be using phone and CB radio’s even more this year to stay connected.

While he encourages those connections, Heil says they need to now when to hang it up.

“Set your cell phone down for a minute as your driving through a country elevator getting your grain dumped.”

He says avoiding that distraction will help ensure the safety of staff and farmers coming into the elevator.

“With this crazy 2020 year we are going through here you will have a lot on your mind as you are out in the field. When you are coming through town with your equipment and through the elevator just think about the safety aspect of things.”

He says just like every other year, he is confident the industry will adapt to challenges and complete a successful harvest.
