Klobuchar ready to work with USDA to get COVID relief to biofuels producers

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar has the ear of Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack as USDA finalizes plans to compensate biofuels producers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Late last year the Minnesota Democrat introduced the Renewable Fuel Feedstock Reimbursement Act alongside Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley.

“And a provision is actually included in the December coronavirus relief package which gives the Secretary authority to make relief payments to renewable fuel producers who experienced market loss.”

She says targeted biofuels aid is included in the USDA Pandemic Assistance for Producers Program announced at the end of March.

“So we want to make sure that works, and I’m going to work with Secretary Vilsack on that.”

Klobuchar is also working with Iowa Republican Joni Ernst on biofuels infrastructure legislation.

“That bill authorizes $500 million for the installation of new fuel pumps for conversion of existing fuel pumps.”

The bill also streamlines rules that currently prevent retail fueling stations from providing higher biofuel blends.

Klobuchar made these comments during a call with the Minnesota Corn Growers Association.
