Kentucky crops emerging despite cool weather

Weather has allowed for a faster-than-average planting pace, but cool temperatures have slowed emergence.

The corn crop is 66% planted, compared to the previous year at 37%, and the 5-year average of 51% with 36% of the crop emerged.

Soybeans are 38% planted compared to 18% last year and the 5-year average of 19%. Winter wheat is 68% headed with 12% of the crop rated excellent and 67% rated good.  Two percent of the tobacco crop has been set and 35% of the crop is larger than 4 inches and supplies are 99% adequate as setting picks up momentum.  Pasture conditions are rated 70% good to excellent and the cold spells have affected hay growth, but baling is underway as weather permits.

Topsoil is rated 89% adequate to surplus and subsoil moisture is rated 90% adequate to surplus.
