Kansas winter wheat harvest is wrapping up with a set of surprising yields

A grain merchandiser in Eastern Kansas says winter wheat harvest has wrapped up in his area.

“Yields were outstanding. Overall, it was a really, good smooth wheat harvest.”

Chad Mustain with Beachner Grain Inc in Parsons tells Brownfield most of the crop was above trend-line yields. “Some of the worst was in that 35 to 40 range, which is fairly low for our area.  Most of the wheat was in that 60 to 80 range with the majority being in the 70s.”

Unlike other areas of the state, he says, drought had little impact on production. “We had plenty of moisture up until about 6 weeks ago. Then it shut off here in the southern half and it has never come back.”

Mustain says warmer and drier weather helped farmers finish harvest ahead of schedule.
