Kansas Farm Bureau says there are too many conversations over carbon markets

Kansas Farm Bureau President Rich Felts says there are still a lot of uncertainties surrounding carbon markets.

“There are so many unknowns about the carbon market, carbon production (and) carbon sequestration.”

He tells Brownfield understanding how to capture carbon is an obstacle in his state because of diverse crop and livestock production and weather challenges. “We look at cost of variants across our state.  A state of Kansas where we go from 40 inches of rain on one side to 14 on the other.  What are we going to do to be able to sequester carbon under those circumstances?”

And, Felts says some government involvement would help. “This is one place we can see the government maybe setting some requirements since regulations do not feel like the government needs to be involved in the implementation of those sequestration issues.”
