Kansas crop ratings struggle as harvest picks up

Kansas’ corn harvest is ahead of last year.

The USDA says corn harvest passed a third complete and is nine percent ahead of last year. The crop is rated 54 percent good to excellent with almost all of it dented.

Soybean harvest is slightly behind at four percent. More than half the crop is dropping leaves and is rated 58 percent good to excellent.

Winter wheat planting is five percent behind last year at 27 percent. Six percent of the crop has emerged, near the average of seven percent.

Sorghum harvest passed 10 percent, more than double than last year at this time. Sorghum coloring is equal with last year at 95 percent. The crop is rated 57 percent good to excellent.

Cotton harvest has begun with more than half the crop opening bolls. Kansas cotton is rated 56 percent good to excellent.

Pasture ratings are 34 percent good to excellent with more than a quarter of pastures in poor to very poor condition.
