June milk production up 0.5% on the year

The USDA says milk production during June 2020 in the top 24 states was up fractionally from June 2019. Production was 17.427 billion pounds, up 0.5% on the year, with California claiming the top spot ahead of Wisconsin. The average of 1,974 pounds per cow was steady with a year ago. Michigan had the highest average, even with a year to year decline of 25 pounds to 2,260 pounds per cow. The number of dairy cattle in the top producing states was 8.827 million head, down 9,000 on the month but up 43,000 on the year.

Milk production during the second quarter of the year was 555.938 million pounds, 0.4% above year ago levels, and for the year to date, production is 112.068 billion pounds, ahead of last year’s pace.

Monthly totals and comparisons in listed Brownfield states:

Illinois: Production: 148 million pounds, up 0.7% from the 147 million in June 2019; average of 1,800 pounds per cow, compared to 1,750 a year ago; herd of 82,000 head, compared to 84,000 last year

Indiana: Production: 345 million pounds, down 0.6% from the 347 million in June 2019; average of 1,960 pounds per cow, compared to 1,940 a year ago; herd of 176,000 head, compared to 179,000 last year

Iowa: Production: 438 million pounds, down 0.9% from the 442 million in June 2019; average of 2,020 pounds per cow, unchanged from a year ago; herd of 217,000 head, compared to 219,000 last year

Michigan: Production: 965 million pounds, down 0.6% from the 971 million in June 2019; average of 2,260 pounds per cow, compared to 2,285 a year ago; herd of 427,000 head, compared to 425,000 last year

Minnesota: Production: 831 million pounds, down 1.4% from the 843 million in June 2019; average of 1,880 pounds per cow, compared to 1,885 a year ago; herd of 442,000 head, compared to 447,000 last year

Ohio: Production: 466 million pounds, up 2% from the 457 million in June 2019; average of 1,840 pounds per cow, compared to 1,835 a year ago; herd of 253,000 head, compared to 249,000 last year

South Dakota: Production: 254 million pounds, up 9.5% from the 232 million in June 2019; average of 1,885 pounds per cow, unchanged from a year ago; herd of 135,000 head, compared to 123,000 last year

Wisconsin: Production: 2.552 billion pounds, down 1.4% from the 2.030 billion in June 2019; average of 2,030 pounds per cow, compared to 2,040 a year ago; herd of 1.257 million head, compared to 1.268 million last year
