June dairy product production down from May, but higher than 2021

The total amount of dairy products produced fell from May to June, but the June output was still higher than a year ago.

USDA says the total cheese production was 1.16 billion pounds.  That’s 2.7% above June 2021 but 2.3 percent below May 2022.  Italian type cheese production was up 4.2% from last year to 485 million pounds, but 0.4% below May 2022.  American type cheese production rose 1% to 462 million pounds but was 4% percent below May 2022.

Butter production fell 10.9% from May to June, but the 161 million pound June production was 2.3% above June 2021.

Dry milk product production was down for the month and the year.

Nonfat dry milk production reached 170 million pounds, down 8.6%.

There was 45.2 million pounds of skim milk powder produced in June, down 16.6%. 

Dry whey production reached 82.0 million pounds, up 7.4% over 2021. June lactose production was 102 million pounds, up 6.3%.  Whey protein concentrate production jumped 16.9% to 45 million pounds.

Frozen product production was mixed in June.  Hard ice cream production was 66.5 million gallons, up 0.7% over last year.  Lowfat ice cream production was down 2.2% at 42.1 million gallons.  Sherbet and frozen yogurt production was also down compared to last year.
