Judges ruling favors ag in California glyphosate case

A federal judge has ruled against California on its labeling requirement for the herbicide glyphosate by issuing an injunction on that state’s Proposition 65 labeling requirement, citing harm to the nation’s agriculture economy.

Missouri Farm Bureau was a co-plaintiff in the case and their president Blake Hurst told members at the group’s legislative day (Tuesday) that it means none of their bins of grain will have to be screened. And, Hurst says an appeal by the state of California is expected, “They’ll find another judge and ask for a stay on the injunction. They’ll do all the tings that lawyers do – which is why they drive fancier cars than you do. And, so, this thing is a long ways from over but I’m proud of our participation in this effort and really tickled that we had good news, at least on the first stage on this journey.”

The National Wheat Growers Association was the lead plaintiff in the case and NAWG CEO Chandler Goule says it’s a win for all farmers and that every regulatory body in the world has found glyphosate safe for use, “They were telling us it could be four to six weeks before we were to get an answer back on this decision and the judge turned it around in literally a week. Meaning that there was an overwhelming amount of science and evidence that glyphosate is safe and the judge took that into consideration.”

He says the injunction is the first step in NAWG’s efforts “to prevent California from forcing farmers, growers and manufacturers to place false and misleading labels on agricultural products.”

  • Of course the evidence slants that way. I’ve had to do epidemiological studies and the companies that make glyphosate control the info that gets out as “proprietary”. My uncle was an applicator and died horribly. Don’t let this be you.

  • If it is so safe, then there is no reason it can’t be listed on all labeling so people can decide. There is no way I want Round Up anywhere anything I eat particularly considering the already proven damage to bees and butterflies.

    • The reason against labeling is because then people like you will point to the label and then say, “If it’s so safe, why do we have a label about it?”

The argument becomes circular. There’s no reason to label glyphosphate…should organic food crops have a copper sulfate label? That’s a highly toxic, organic-approved pesticide.

  • ‪If they can’t kill us with guns, they’ll poison our food, water and air. Funny thing, they’re eating, drinking and breathing it as well. It’s a long and painful death, chronic illness. ‬Get educated. Glyphosate is deadly.
