Johnson pleased his Butcher Block Act in Biden’s exec order

A Republican Congressman is pleased President Biden’s executive order on competition includes the goal of a bill he’s been pushing for small processors.

Dusty Johnson of South Dakota tells Brownfield Ag News his Butcher Block Act was meant to help small processors better compete.

“We have a meat packing industry that’s really dominated by four big boys and frankly I think the market would be a little fairer if we had a fifth and a sixth and a seventh competitor. And if we can’t get that right away why don’t we get some of these folks with relatively small slaughter numbers, give them the ability to build capacity.”

Johnson says the administration listened, “President Biden liked the idea. He included it in his executive order and there’s going to be substantial resources being made available to those small processors. That IS really going to be good news.”

The USDA says it will spend $500 Million dollars for expanded meat and poultry processing capacity to increase competition and level the playing field for family farmers and ranchers.
