John Deere is acquiring Blue River Technology, a California-based company with crop-spraying equipment that relies on “machine learning”.

According to Deere, the technology will help farmers optimize inputs by spraying herbicides only where weeds are present through the use of computer vision, robotics and machine learning. They say Blue River’s “smart machines” are able to detect, identify and make management decisions about every single plant in a field.

Blue River’s technology has been used in lettuce fields and is currently being tested on cotton.

The cost of the acquisition is 305 million dollars.
