January milk production nearly 18 billion pounds

The USDA says milk production during January in the major production states was 17.918 billion pounds, up 1.2% on the year. California was the top producer for the month, followed by Wisconsin and Idaho.

Production averaged 2,031 pounds per cow, 21 pounds above last year, with Michigan claiming the top spot at 2,280 pounds.

The number of milk cows in the major production states was 8.821 million head, up on both the month and the year.

The USDA’s January dairy product production numbers are out March 4th.
