It will take time for ethanol demand to ‘claw back’

A leading ag economist says it might take the ethanol industry a while to ‘claw back’ after demand losses suffered from the pandemic.

Renewable Fuels Chief Economist Scott Richman says the current market situation for ethanol is similar to the gasoline following the great recession.

“It took a few years to get back to where we were in terms of gasoline demand,” Richman said.

He said ethanol will eventually get back to 2019 demand levels…

“But it’s somewhat through our blends and probably through a little bit of additional export as well,” Richman said.

He said eliminating trade barriers will be key for demand growth. Richman presented on a Nebraska Corn Growers Association ethanol webinar.
