Iowa’s cattle-on-feed numbers declined in September

Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in all Iowa feedlots totaled 1.04 million head on October 1st, down six percent from last year.

The larger one-thousand head-plus feedlots had 570-thousand of that total, down five percent from 2015, while the feedlots with a capacity of less than one-thousand head contained 470-thousand head, down eight percent from last year.

Placements for all feedlots in Iowa in September were up three percent from last year. Placements into the larger feedlots were down seven percent, but placements into the smaller feedlots increased 19 percent from September of last year.
